The Cowboys did not mess up by extending Zeke, they have a running back for the first time since Emmitt Smith. Where the Cowboys messed up was in the 2016 NFL Draft. They drafted Zeke 4th overall and Jalen Ramsey went 5th overall. They would’ve gotten more value with the 4th pick if they got a superstar cornerback who will compete at a higher level for longer than any RB. I do not believe that any running back is worthy of a first round pick.
In 2017 they drafted Taco Charlton with the 28th pick in the first round. TJ Watt went 30th overall and he is in contention for defensive player of the year this year.
In 2018 they drafted Leighton Vander Esch with the 19th pick where he wasn’t even the best linebacker available at the time. Darrius Leonard went 36th (2nd round). They also could’ve picked Lamar Jackson at 19 considering he fell into Baltimore’s lap at 32.
In 2019 they didn’t even have a 1st round pick because of a trade with Oakland.
In 2020 they picked Ceede Lamb which was a good pick. Ceede is a stud WR, but they need defensive help desperately. K’Lavon Chaisson went 20th overall to the Jaguars.
The Cowboys went wrong because of their draft picks. They have a chance to fix their team in 2021 but this is not probable if Jerry Jones is the one making the draft picks.
